From a wall to support points
An existing wall may distribute loads along its length. A new beam or frame may create different support points. The engineer assesses what this means for the existing floors, substructure and foundations.
Gather information
Foundation drawings, floor details and records of damage or previous alterations can be useful. Missing information may require investigation. Additional work can affect floors, cost and timing, so compare alternatives as complete structural solutions.
Your checklist
- Share available foundation information
- Report previous structural alterations
- Ask whether more investigation is needed
