Steel beam or frame: what is the difference?

A beam transfers loads to suitable supports. A frame combines a beam with columns. The structural situation determines which solution is appropriate.

Space around the opening

A beam bearing on masonry needs suitable wall sections at either end. With a frame, columns provide support. Both options affect clear width and cladding. Discuss the finished space rather than only the rough opening.

Look below the steel

Loads under a column can be more concentrated, so the supporting floor and foundations also need assessment. A narrow column does not mean a minor floor intervention. Compare complete designs including feasibility, underlying work, access, installation and finishes. The steel price alone does not describe the whole project.

Your checklist

  • Agree on finished clear dimensions
  • Ask about visible beams and columns
  • Compare complete structural solutions
